Takes an original and forceful look at the future of Europe and the world. Examines the new order which will result as the importance of national boundaries recede in the face of a shared economic future. Calling it a ``consumer era'' that is now upon us, the authors argue that world peace in the coming years will have less to do with competing ideologies than consumer products, and that the European Community will play a central role in this drama. Accordingly, the first three chapters investigate the forces which are dragging the world to the threshold of a global market--capitalism, consumerism and consortia. The actual mechanics of European unification and the obstacles to making it a reality are explored in chapters four and five. The decline of Japan, the revitalization of the U.S. and the technological explosion are the focus of chapters six, seven and eight. A final section returns to the political, economic and business issues of world realignment, exploring new directions in the relationships among Japan, Europe and the U.S., with an eye toward the rapid consumerization of Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union and Communist China.
